Ang Li Ping June
June Design

Transformation is the title of June's self-proposed project, which is the exploration of oneself. Self-reflection is an ongoing process; you do it all the time, in all aspects in your life. By jumping into the pool of self-discovery, she was able to explore her identity and become confident in living by her values, skills, interests and motivations. Focusing on the transition created by shapes, forms, colours and size, M.C Escher heavily influences her works. June has designed the elements such that they convey her concept of Chaos and Order. The posters, discussing her family relationships, views on art, and passion for life, enabled her to unleash her creativity and boost her self-esteem. June achieves a sense of accomplishment and pleasure by engaging in an activity which interests her.

Tiny but Mighty is a height-related project targeted at females standing at 150cm. Making proverbial lemonade from the height she grew up with, this project is an effort in self-empowerment. By letting the viewers stand in her shoes, she takes a cheeky jab at the advantages of being short. The posters include quirky illustrations and typography, with a playful sense of humour. The collateral items such as the tote bag, memo pads and the A5 planner, are created and designed with the consideration that they are all smallbut useful. Being short is not that bad!

Pick&go is a proposal for the brief “Monotype”, set by the D&AD. The objective is to create a publication that reaches out to a niche audience and let them connect the familiar (a usual newspaper), the new (the digital age) and the very personal (the readers themselves), all in a 16-page tabloid. The aim was to create an iconic type, which may help the paper to stand out and gain a following. With that, Liling has worked with visual hierarchy, photography, illustrations and typographic study for the project to make the reading experience a different one. It is also printed on a different kind of paper, St. Cotton Plain, to give it an unusual touch.

Frolic’in Pots aim to raise awareness about the importance of loving nature with the demonstration of a moving garden and the production of various collaterals. Targeted at teenagers and young adults, a quirky and fun direction has been given to the branding. Hannah created a variety of collaterals that consist of typography, pictograms, abstract design and illustrations to encapsulate the beauty and loveliness of the environment.

The cool image of the brand, Vespa, has led to the idea of her producing a moving garden due to some of its distinct characteristics: mobility, attractiveness and its popularity amongst the younger generation. Frolic’in Pots introduces Kinokuku as the mascot, who serves as a companion for children of all ages. Kinokuku encourages kids to enjoy the outdoors rather than being fixated to digital devices.

While handling a major design project with adequate professionalism, students were also taught how to analyse and assess their own designs. Being able to choose from a diverse range of project proposals helped to stimulate inquisitiveness. Critical thinking in social and cultural contexts was also encouraged in the students' exploration of graphic design through various research methods. Here, we convey ideas and messages through visual representations, including design layouts, stylizations and typography.
